Over the last decade, the legal and regulatory environment has become increasingly complex and the risks increasingly substantial. At the same time, the growth in data to be managed and safeguarded — whether it is for discovery in litigation, due diligence in an acquisition, or regulatory compliance purposes — has been explosive. While outside counsel provide critically important services and assurance in dealing with those challenges, the pressure from business units and the CFO’s office to reign in spending has never been stronger. As general counsel (GCs) have begun taking a closer look at the services they deliver internally and those that they send out to their preferred law firms, they have found that it pays to unbundle those services and consider their component parts.
